Digipak Plan

This is our plan for our Digipak. We have gone for a fun theme for it so that it matches our video.

Front- Is a picture of our main actor, Matt Jones. We have created the picture so that half of it is cartoon and the other half normal. To show reality and imagination.
Back - The list of songs spread all over the back of it. The picture in the background would be the back of the picture on the front. Therefore, it would be a picture of the back of Matt's head.
Centre- A picture of Matt facing the camera. He will be wearing the head-dress.
Extra Flap - This will be a band shot, with all the bands names above their heads.
Left Side - A picture of Darwin pointing towards the middle picture of Matt.
Right Side - A picture of Jack pointing towards the middle picture of Matt.

What We Used Whilst Filming

Camera

To film our music video we used two cameras, the Canon 7D and Canon 550D. We used these cameras because they give a high quality film which would make our video look better and give it  professional look. Also, by using two cameras it would allow us to get twice as many shots and film. The cameras were placed on tripods in-between our lights that we had set up. We used tripods so that our footage was steady and so that certain footage was in the same place, due to using split screen.
7D

550D

Lighting

We used two pairs of lights whilst filming our video. We put them equally both sides of the tripods so that the lighting wasn't drastically different.

We used lights similar to these ones. We used four lights, two pairs, in total.

We also used this lighting meter to change how bright or dark the lights were.

Analysis Of A Party Scene Video

We are going to be shooting our new footage on Saturday 16th November. For this we will need to analyse videos and draw out the storyboards for the shoot.

I am going to analyse 'The Vamps' 'Can We Dance' video as it has party scenes included in it. I will be analysing those scenes.

When the party scenes are on there are a variety of shots used in this video. For example, there are;

  • Band Shots
  • Close Up Shots
  • Mid Shots
The lighting is very important here, so that it doesn't just look like a group of people in a room. We will be using the same lights as before and also some disco lights to make it look like a proper party scene.
The costumes are quite simple in this video as it is casual/party outfits, which will be easy to organise.

First Day Of Shooting

On our first day of shooting we filmed through out the day, using different lights and cameras.

However, after looking at our footage the next day on the school mac we didn't have enough footage to cover the whole song. After looking into how we could change our idea without it being drastic we came up with this idea;

To shoot a party scene that we could fit into the middle of the song.

What we learnt from our failed attempt:

  • To check our footage thoroughly so that we spot any mistakes that we may have made.
  • Make sure lighting is perfect and equal. (If needed).

This is our second storyboard for the rest of our filming. We have chosen simple, but effective shots so our video looks of a high quality.

Storyboard

These images are our storyboard for our video that we are filming on Thursday. We will follow this so that we know that we haven't left anything out.

Stardom

Stars as constructions

Even though stars in the media are said to be 'normal people' their whole image is created to make them different to other people out there. It is done by what they wear, what they say and how they act. It is easier for stars of the music industry to create a USP for themselves rather than film stars who have to change for different roles.

For example Lady Gaga, she wear weird clothes and that's why people remember her, because she is weird.

All these outfits that she is wearing in these pictures are worn to shock people. I remember when she wore the meat dress and people were all talking about it the next day. It is used as a promotional method.

Ideology and culture

Stars use their position to influence people to spread their beliefs. They mainly do this through social networking and expect their fans to help them spread the word of their beliefs. For example,Simon Cowell posts a lot of tweets/pictures of his love for animals and tries to get his fans to help him stop cruelty etc.

Industry and audience

The main use of stars is to make money for the industry from their fans, the audience. The stars are made so that the audience will like them so that their companies can make money out of them. The industry does this by constantly making fresh faces come into the industry from all different types of genres so that all types of people can like it, from teenagers to the older generation.

For example, 'The Vamps' are a young boy band who typically try to aim for the same target audience as 'One Direction'. They do this by;

Wearing fashionable clothes
Being attractive

Character And Personality

Due to magazines and paparazzi, many people always compare themselves to the celebrites that they see featured on the front page of magzines. However, many stars (especially film stars) are seen through the characters that they play and people believe them to be like that.

However, music stars are based upon a few pieces of text which is always reread. Therefore a lot of music stars get 'Second Album Syndrome' which is when they fail to keep up their persona for a long amount of time and don't need to release a second album due to the first one being a success.

Shooting Script

The music video for 'The 99's' song will be filmed on Thursday 6th November.

We are going to start filming at 10 in the morning, when Darwin and our actor, Matt, will come to my house.

We have decided to film the over enthusiastic character first, due to his actions controlling what the other character does. We have planned to spend 3 hours filming those shots, and getting them perfect, which would bring us to 1 in the afternoon.

Once that footage has been filmed we will need to convert it onto our mac so that we can get the timing perfect on our second footage, which is controlled by the footage that we filmed earlier on in the day.

The next day we will spend editing and making our video on our own Mac.

Location Analysis

The location that Darwin and I are going to use is my bedroom. We decided to use this because I have a big white wall which we can use as the background. Also, we decided to use the bedroom because our idea for the video is a teenager bored in their bedroom, so obviously it is the perfect location. To make this room look more believable as a teenage boys rooms we wouldn't show the wardrobe and we would take the pink quilt away. However, the rest of the room is fine as it is neutral colours and objects.

We are going to use an outside light to make our lighting perfect so that the split screen effect works. We will use two of them so that there are no obvious shadows or darker areas.

Props Analysis

We will be using numerous props for our video. We need a lot of props to carry the story along in our video because we only have one actor in our video.

The prop we will be using and why;

Microphone

We will be using this for the performance part of our video. The 'over enthusiastic' version will click their fingers and the microphone will appear. We decided to use a microphone because it allows Darwin and I to get different aspects of performing into the video.

Guitar

We will also be using the guitar for performance. We will use the stop motion technique to make the appear and disappear.

iPhone

We will use this to show the music playing and being turned up by the enthusiastic person. We decided to use this because it has a big screen and therefore would be easy for the audience to see what is on the screen.

 Bed

At the end of the song it says "I was only dreaming of". We plan for the video to go all hazy and the actor will be seen in bed.

Split Screen

For our final idea for The 99s song '(What A Night) To Be Alive' we need to be able to so split screen on iMovie. We didn't know how we would accomplish this, so I looked online to see how to do it.

From YouTube I gathered different videos to make sure that I knew exactly how to do it, and to do it well.

This was the main one that I used to find out. The main points that I got out of this was;
 1) Film two different clips. However, the lighting has to be exactly the same and in the same place for it to be effective.
2) On iMovie, start a new project
3) Put the two videos into the same projects
4) Make the videos close to the same lengths
5) Click on iMovie preferences  - show advanced tools
6) Right click, add green screen
7)  Click of cropped in top left corner and drag how you want to crop it
8) Click Done

Actor Profile

The actor that we have chosen to be in our music video is Matt Jones. He is a year 13 student who also studies Media himself.

Name: Matthew Jones
Age: 17
Gender: Male
Ethnicity: White British

We decided to use Matt because we believe that he wouldn't mind making a fool out of himself and therefore it would make our video seem more believable. Matt also is musical, being in a few bands and knowing the ins and outs of different genres of music.

Matt's view

"I love acting, and I love music! Being given the opportunity to be in a music video is amazing and I can't wait to see the end results!"

Kerrang!

The magazine we decided to use to place our album advert is 'Kerrang!'

Kerrang! is the UK's best selling music magazine and has artists like Mallory Knox and Don Broco included in them.

Kerrang! is owned by Bauer Media Group who also own 'Take A Break', 'Bella' and the 'TV listings'. Bauer also own radio stations and music channels like 'Smash Hits'and and'Kiss.'

The different genres included in Kerrang! include;

  • Rock
  • Heavy Metal
  • Punk
  • Indie

The magazine has a range of target audiences as they cover many different genres. However, overall it mainly targets teenagers/young adults. This would be good for our video because this is who our target audience is.

Kerrang! also host a tour of rock music around the UK, which usually takes place at the beginning of the year in January.  It has included bands with the likes of;

  • Biffy Clyro
  • Young Guns
  •  Good Charlotte

Still analysis

Bastille - Thing We Lost In The Fire still analysis

Bastille are a 4 piece Indie- Rock band from London. It consists of; Dan Smith (lead vocals, keyboards, percussion), Chris Wood (drums, backing vocals) Will Farquarson (bass, keyboards, acoustic guitar, backing vocals) and Kyle Simmon ( keyboards, percussion, backing vocals).

 This is the establishing shot at the beginning of the video. The background of this shot is simple and basically white, which contrasts with the costumes of the actors in the video, due to them all being in black. I believe this is done to tell a story of the men, they seem quiet menacing or they could be seen as quite sad. The framing of this shot is so that the camera can get all the men included in it. The way I see this shot is that it is starting the story of the video.

 This is a close up shot of one of the actors. I think that a close up shot is being used to empahsise who this man is. I believe it to be an older version on the front man as an exact shot is used, later on in the video.
 The lighting used in this mid shot is used to highlight the girls face so the audience can see that she is a main character of this story. This is a slight high angle shot, which could imply that this girl is a weaker character and something is going to happen to her. Her costume is a contrast to the men at the beginning, who were in black. This could be to show innocence and purity.
 This type of lighting is very common for in Indie genre as it gives off a very relaxed mood. The framing in the shot makes the audience concentrate on the girl who is in the front of the frame and in focus.

 This is one of the ending shots used in the video. It is a high angle landscape shot. I believe the sunset is used to signify an ending (the ending of the song and story). The use of the ice on the floor contrasts to the song lyrics, which is about fire.

Advert Analysis

This is the Kasabian magazine advert for their album 'Empire'. Kasabian are a British Indie Rock band and this album was released in August 2006 and went to number one in the UK Album Charts.  They named it 'Empire' because the band use that word to describe something good.

The artwork used in this advert is the album artwork used for the front cover of the CD. It is a King of clubs playing card. This could portray that Kasabian are powerful and one of the strongest, highest band in their type of genre. (King of clubs is a high playing card). It also shows a king or old soldier of some sort carrying a naked woman. This could imply that again they are strong, due to the size of the man compared to the woman.

There is also 3 critic opinions included in the advert. They are powerful sentences used to describe how the critic felt about the album and all the words used can also be used to describe a powerful King. For example; "World takeover predicted."

The colours used in the artwork of this advert are the majority primary colours. I believe this is done because they aren't a mix. They are strong and stand boldly alone. Which may be what Kasabian want to get across to their audience.

This is the Foo Fighters advert for their Greatest Hits album which was released on November 2nd 2009. Foo Fighters are an American Rock band who formed in 1994. It is made up of 5 members.

The background of this advert looks as though it is some sort of metal. I believe that they used that due to the original name of the band. Foo Fighters are named that because they got their name from UFO sightings during World War Two, which were called Foo Fighters. Therefore I think that the metal is used to represent the outer casing of what a UFO would look like.

The artwork used on this advert is the logo for the band. I think this is used due to the album being their greatest hits. Therefore the band would have to be quite well known and popular to release an album like that. This would mean that people would know their logo and realise it was an advertisement for Foo Fighters.

Noah And The Whale Album Cover Analysis

This is an album cover from Noah and The Whale's 'First Days Of Spring' album. It includes the 4 band members in a simple surrounding of blue sky and some grass blades. I believe these are included as the album title is 'First days of Spring' therefore it is showing things that people would relate to spring with. The text is placed in the sky as it is a clear background colour therefore it would be easier for the audience to see the text.

Mumford And Sons Digipak Analysis

Mumford And Sons are an English Folk Rock band. It is made up of 4 men who formed the band in December 2007. This digipak for 'Sigh No More' was released in October 2009 and reached number 2 in the UK album charts.

This  is the front cover for the digipak. It is the same as their album cover. It includes the band standing in a shop window, which makes them look as though they are for sale. This could be that due to this being their debut album, this makes them brand new. Therefore all the new 'products' are put at the front of the shop to make them sell. The street that is shown on the front cover looks very simple, due to the colours and lack of activity that is shown there. I believe they do this because they are relating it to the type of music that they produce.

This is the back cover for the digipak. It includes the songs on the album and the copyright information. It also looks like the back of the building that is seen on the front cover. It again is very simple and is mostly white, which seems to be a recurring theme throughout this digipak. I believe it to be a representation of their music, as it is simple and relaxed.

This is the middle section of the digipak. It shows the 4 band members sitting out of windows, looking very relaxed. All of them are wearing some aspect of white in their clothing, which links with the white theme that is happening in this digipak. They all look happy in the picture which obviously gives a feel good vibe to the audience, which is what their music genre portrays.

This is the CD included in the digipak. I believe that it is in black to contrast with all the white that is used.
